My doctor prescribed an old class of anti-depressant (called "Sinequan" in Australia) for me some time ago. It was an Imipramine. He said that while he no longer prescribes these for depression, they are very good for clearing up sleeping difficulties, which was what I was experiencing at the time. This was true, but I found that taking them earlier in the evening is best as the side effects the next day are a bit disagreeable--I felt as though my head was stuffed with cotton wool, dry mouth, and everything seemed slowed down. It goes without saying that these should not be taken with alcohol--I took them one evening and had a couple of bourbon and cokes afterwards. I suffered actual memory-loss as a result; I could not remember the next morning how I got to bed.
