My family doctor prescribed xanax for me a year ago, advising me to take it three times a day, *plus* taking it whenever I had an anxiety attack. Within two months I was desperately addicted, since Xanax is not meant to be taken at such high doses for long periods of time. Withdrawl was umitigated HELL -- I was like a strung-out junkie. I had shakes, sweats, nightmares, nausea, and vomiting. The anxiety that Xanax had been keeping at bay by making me a zombie crashed down on me, and it took nearly six weeks for me to level out again as far as overcoming the physical symptoms and the increased anxiety. I now take the longer-acting Klonopin only when I have a panic attack, and it seems to work well for me.
